Untangling the Web of Internet Addictions:
A Mental Health Focus

The Workshop: The impact of digital technology, including the effect of the Internet and Computers on behavior and relationships is well documented at this point. There is a growing need for an understanding of the clinical issues related to the use, abuse and
compulsive patterns associated with Computer and Internet use. This workshop will focus on the negative impact that digital technology has had on human behavior and relationships. We will
focus on the theory, etiology, treatment and management strategies for dealing with a variety of digitally-enabled behaviors such as pornography, cybersex, gambling and compulsive emailing.

Learning Objectives --  Participants will learn:

1. To become familiar with the issues and concepts associated with
    the impact of digital technology (computers, Internet, cell
    phones, PDA’s, MP3 players) on human behavior and relationships.

2. To develop an understanding of the signs and symptoms of the
    use, abuse and compulsive/impulsive behavior associated with
    digital devices and computers/Internet.

3. To learn to conceptualize these syndromes and become familiar
    with treatment strategies in the context of general clinical
    practice.

David Greenfield, Ph.D. is Clinical Director of The Healing Center, LLC (www.thehealingcenter.us) and former partner of Psychological Health Associates, LLC, and is founder of The Center for Internet Behavior (virtual-addiction.com.) Dr. Greenfield’s research, writing, and clinical work on computer psychology and behavior, and Internet addiction has appeared on CNN, ABC News, CBS News, Fox News Channel, and Good Morning America. His work has been featured in U.S. News and World Report, Business Week, The LA Times, News-
week, People
, and many other national publications. He is recognized as one of the world’s leading authorities on Internet use and abuse, and is author of Virtual Addiction as well as several professional articles and book chapters on Internet and Computer psychology and the impact of technology on human behavior. Dr. Greenfield’s current interests include integrating spirituality, intuition, energy
medicine, and mind/body approaches in the treatment of addictions and other health and behavioral problems.
 
Dr. Greenfield is a fellow and past-president of the Connecticut Psychological Association, and is Assistant Clinical Professor in Psychiatry at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He
maintains his home and clinical and consulting practice in Connec-
ticut where he operates The Center for Internet Behavior which conducts research, training, consultation, and treatment for Internet use and behavior for businesses and individuals and The Healing Center, LLC which integrates spirituality, intuition, and mind/body techniques into psychological healing.
