The Impact of War:
Treating the Families of our Soldiers

Featured Speaker:
David S. Riggs, Ph.D.
Executive Director of the Center for Deployment Psychology

The Workshop

The impact of stressful and potentially traumatic events often affects individuals persons well beyond those who experience the events directly. This presentation will focus on the impact of severe stress and trauma on families with an emphasis on the stress associated with military deployment and combat. The discussion will include reactions of families to different types of stress that occurs throughout the deployment cycle and will emphasize potential difficulties associated with the reintegration of deployed family members back into the normal family system.

In addition to the stress placed on families by military deployments, the potential that military personnel exposed to combat will develop trauma-related psychological problems including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can also significantly impact the family. The presentation will include information on the impact of PTSD symptoms and other trauma reactions on the family members of those who have the symptoms.

Learning Objectives

1. To be able to identify potential family stressors associated with
different points of the military deployment cycle.

2. To be familiar with the impact of PTSD symptoms on relationship
    and family functioning.

3. To understand the ways in which PTSD symptoms may impact
on the family members of people with the disorder.

4. To be able to discuss various factors associated with PTSD that
may place trauma exposed individuals at risk for perpetrating
    violence in their families.
