The Sandwich Generation:
Caring for Our Children, Our Parents, and Ourselves
Featured Speaker:
Miriam K. Aronson, Ed.D.
Program Description
The increasing longevity being experienced by today’s older adults is
accompanied by unanticipated needs for long-term chronic and personal care
for many. Escalating needs for assistance are generally met by adult children
who find themselves thrust into an intergenerational squeeze, caught between
the needs of their aging relatives and their own children -- sandwiched -- often
while struggling with their own aging-related issues. There are an estimated 45
million family caregivers in the United States, providing “informal care” worth
an estimated $250 billion.
Family caregiving is truly the backbone of care for frail and disabled elders and
comes with a range of risks and negative impacts on the health and well-being of
the caregivers themselves. For this reason, caregiving is truly a public health
dilemma and an economic, social and political challenge for our times.
This seminar, designed for practitioners working with patients and their families
with sandwich generation issues, will cover the demographic, social, political,
economic, health and mental health aspects of caregiving, incorporating research
findings, and translating research into practice. Practice issues will include
assessment and mental health interventions, as well as dealing with the most
common “tipping points” and recognizing and preventing abuse. The
presentation will incorporate case histories and audiovisual materials.
