The
Workshop:
Mental Health professionals in all settings are faced
with clients who report memory problems.
Distinguishing among possible sources of memory
problems, including aging, depression and dementia,
can be diofficult. Determining appropriate medical
and/or psychological interventions can be equally
daunting.
Learning Objectives -- Participants will be able to:
- Learn about the different types of memory (e.g. working memory, remote memory, etc).
- Learn the types of changes that individuals experience with age.
- Learn about the impact of diseases on memory.
- Learn to identify the appropriate time to make a referral for a memory assessment.
- Learn about the available pharmaceutical treatments for memory difficulties.
- Learn about non-pharmaceutical treatments for memory difficulties.
Norman M. Gordon, M.D. is the Chief of Neurology at
Miriam Hospital and a Clinical Associate Professor of
Neurology at Brown University. He serves as a Consulting
Neurologist at Butler and Rhode Island Hospital. He earned
his medical degree from the University of the Witwatersrand,
Johannesburg, South Africa. Dr. Gordon is also the president
of Brain Resource Company and has served as the Medical
Director for CNS Reasearch. He has co-authored 14
publications in peer-reviewed journals, supervised 10 grants
totaling over 1 million dollars and has been invited to present
Recent Advances in Headache Management at the Brown
University/Lifespan CME Conference as well as presenting
Head trauma, Migraines and Headache at the Mental Health
Conference Association National CME Conference.
John Gunstad, Ph.D. is currently a post doctoral fellow in
neuropsychology at Brown University and the Miriam
Hospital. He received his Ph.D. from Ohio University, he
has published over 24 articles on this topic and he has received
several federal and foundation grants in neuropsychology.
Robert H. Paul, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist in Rhode
Island. He is currently a psychologist with Miriam Hospital
and has served as an Assistant Professor in the Department
of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown Medical
School. He is also the primary supervisor for clinical
neuropsychology internships and clinical neuropsychology
research placement at Miriam Hospital. Dr. Paul received
his Ph.D from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences
Center and has co-authored over 60 publications and 5 book
chapters. His book Vascular Dementia: Cerebrovascular
Mechanisms and Clinical management is due for release this summer.
