Legislative Activity

Legislative Activity

Legislative Vision: The Rhode Island Psychological Association actively promotes legislation that is consistent with our mission. We have a regular presence in the State House in support of bills that would enhance and protect the profession of psychology, and bills that would contribute to the mental health and well-being of the general public.

Each legislative season (January through June), RIPA sponsors legislation, and works with other public and professional advocacy organizations to lobby for our bills and for bills sponsored by other groups.

RIPA's legislative goals are strengthened by the active involvement of Members and the public. We welcome your participation through suggestions for legislation, testifying at hearings, writing to your legislators in support of particular bills, and by talking with others about the issues that are considered during each legislative session.

For more information about how you can help, please contact the Chair of the RIPA Legislative Committee.

Lobbying Information
You can make a difference in the passage or defeat of bills. Your State Representative and State Senator are responsible to you, and are available to speak with you about your support or opposition to specific bills.
  • Identify your RI State Legislators. This page of the RI Secretary of State's Web site asks you to enter your address, and then provides you with the names and contact information of your representatives. You may also obtain an alphabetical listing of legislators, or call the Secretary of State's office at (401) 222-2473
  • For more information about lobbying, email Peter Oppenheimer, Ph.D., Chair of the RIPA Legislative Committee, or call him at (401) 245-0015.
